Difference between the SRAM and DRAM explained : Why DRAM Needed to be refreshed thousand of time ???

Today I will tell you the difference between the SRAM and DRAM. RAM is a volatile memory it holds the data for a limited period that is till the power is supplied to the RAM.

DRAm- types of Ram

You must go through my previous article on "RAM (Random Access Memory): The Heart of Computer" to understand the difference between the types of RAM in a proper manner.......

As we all know that the SRAM stands for the Static Random Access Memory and the DRAM stands for the Dynamic Random Access Memory.

If you ask anyone the difference between the SRAM and DRAM then will tell you that the SRAM is static and the DRAM is dynamic in nature. But this is not the complete answer to this question. The answer is far more beyond that. Now let's understand the main difference s between the SRAM and the DRAM.

Static RAM
The main difference is that the SRAM need not to be refreshed hundred of time in one clock cycle whereas the DRAM needs to be refreshed hundreds of time in a clock cycle. But many of us don't know the reason behind this. The reason behind this is the architecture of the SRAM which provides the SRAM with this facility. Actually the SRAM consists of only the transistors and the invertors. The data is fed to the SRAM with the help of the bitline and is carried forward by the wordline. The inverter is used to generate the feedback which is used as the input for the transistors again and again that's why the SRAM need not to be refreshed thousand of time in the a clock cycle.
In one memory bit there are 6 transistors of SRAM which makes the SRAM bulky.

working of SRAM

  • The SRAM are very bulky and require the more space for the storage purpose.
  • But the speed of the SRAM is very much faster that the DRAM as they are not needed to be refreshed.
  • The power required for the operation of the SRAM is very much higher than the DRAM this is because the power required to operate the 6 transistors will be much more that the power required to operate the 1 transistor.
  • Due to its high speed the SRAM is also used as the cache memory and also the main memory in the servers for providing the best performance to the users.
  • As the SRAM has many advantages over the DRAM that's why the cost of the SRAM is much higher than the DRAM.
Size of SRAM

Whereas the architecture of the DRAM is completely different from the SRAM, the DRAM need to be refreshed hundred of time in a clock cycle as it is made of transistors and the capacitors. There is no thing called invertors in the DRAM so the feedback is not generated and the input is to be given to the transistors again and again in every clock cycle. There is an another reason also responsible for the above issue that is the property of the capacitors, that is the capacitors hold the data for a limited period of time so the capacitors gets discharged after a certain time so there is need to charge the capacitor at the regular basis.

Working of DRAM
  • In the one bit memory there is only 1 transistor that makes the DRAM less bulky .
  • The DRAM is opposite to the SRAM that is the DRAM requires the less power to run they are cheaper and the size is very compact..
  • Due these all reasons the DRAM is mostly used in the today’s normal computers.

Further there is a very long classification of the DRAM which will be brought to you in the next article related to the RAM. I hope that now you might have understood the difference between the SRAM and the DRAM. And importantly the reason behind the need to refresh the RAM hundred of time in a clock cycle.
